Some of our patients have "scary dreams" before starting orthodontic treatment.
Often these "dreams" are caused by rumors about the painfulness of the treatment. Right before the treatment begins, we usually hear these words: "will I feel pain?"
Contrary to fears and rumors, from the moment the braces are placed until they are removed, the patient should not feel sharp pain.
Usually, patients feel tension on their teeth in the first week after starting treatment and after switching to a new archwire. This is, of course, a normal phenomenon, but there are also idealist doctors (but I won't name names) who start treatment with thin thermo-activated archwires so that patients feel no tension at all.
To relieve the tension from the teeth, you can take a painkiller (any except acetylsalicylics, Aspirin, etc., as they slow down tooth movement), simply drink a glass of cool water, or eat ice cream if you have thermo-activated archwires.
– If you feel sharp pain, you must contact your orthodontist.
