Space for Harmony: Correction of Crowded Teeth
Crowded teeth, or as patients say, "crooked teeth," is one of the most common reasons for visiting an orthodontist. This is not just an aesthetic flaw. Teeth that overlap create areas that are difficult to clean, which can lead to cavities and gum disease. My task is not just to "move" the teeth, but to create enough space for them to take their correct and healthy position.
Why do crowded teeth occur?
The main reason is a discrepancy between the size of the teeth and the size of the jaw. Simply put, the teeth lack the space to align in a straight row. This can be caused by genetic factors, early loss of baby teeth, or harmful habits in childhood.
How do we create space for the teeth?
Modern orthodontics strives for treatment without the extraction of healthy teeth. There are several key methods for creating the necessary space:
-
Dental Arch Expansion: Using braces, aligners, or special appliances (like Hyrax), we can widen the jaw, especially in growing patients.
-
Protrusion (forward tilting): A slight forward tilt of the front teeth also provides additional space.
-
Interproximal Reduction (IPR): Minimal, completely safe stripping of enamel (within 0.1-0.25 mm) from the side surfaces of the teeth.
What appliances are used to correct crowding?
The choice depends on the degree of crowding and your aesthetic preferences. We can use:
-
Braces (metal, ceramic, self-ligating): The classic and most powerful tool for solving complex cases.
-
Aligners (clear trays): An excellent option for treating mild to moderate crowding with maximum comfort and aesthetics.
