A Deeper Look: X-ray and CT in Orthodontics

To build a sturdy house, an architect needs to see not just the facade, but everything hidden inside. In orthodontics, radiological studies are our way of looking deeper to see the complete picture, which is unavailable during a standard visual examination. This is not an optional, but a mandatory part of the diagnosis, ensuring a safe and predictable treatment.

What does the orthodontist see on the images?

X-rays and CT scans allow me to assess the condition of the structures that determine the success of the entire treatment:

• Panoramic X-ray (OPG): Provides a general overview of all teeth, their roots, the buds of permanent teeth in children, and the condition of the bone tissue.

• Cephalometric X-ray (Ceph): This is a side-view X-ray of the skull, key for analyzing the bite, jaw proportions, and planning movements that affect the facial profile.

• Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT): This is a 3D study that gives us comprehensive information about root positions, bone volume, and the condition of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).

How safe are these studies?

I understand patients' concerns about radiation. It's important to know that we use only modern digital equipment with minimal radiation exposure. The radiation dose from an orthodontic study is comparable to what you receive during a few hours of flying in an airplane. The diagnostic value of this data is immeasurably higher than the minimal risk.

What is the difference between a regular X-ray and a CT scan?

While an X-ray (OPG, Ceph) is a two-dimensional, flat picture, a CT scan (CBCT) is a three-dimensional model. A CT scan is necessary in complex cases, for planning orthognathic surgery, for diagnosing TMJ problems, or for accurately assessing the position of impacted (unerupted) teeth.
