Caring for the Future: Braces for Children
Many parents believe that orthodontic treatment should only begin once a child has all of their permanent teeth. However, the most effective "window" for intervention often opens much earlier. Braces for children do not always mean a full set on all teeth, as with teenagers. It is often an early, interceptive treatment that helps solve serious problems with minimal effort and creates ideal conditions for the growth and development of the jaws.
At what age might a child need braces?
The optimal age for a first consultation with an orthodontist is 6-7 years. During this period, I can assess how the teeth are changing and the jaws are growing. Early treatment with braces (so-called "2x4" treatment) may be indicated at 8-10 years of age to address specific issues:
-
Correcting severe crowding to create space for erupting teeth.
-
Correcting a crossbite.
-
Eliminating harmful habits that affect tooth position.
-
Closing large gaps between the front teeth.
What is a partial brace system?
Often in childhood, there is no need to place braces on all the teeth. We use a partial brace system (a "2x4" system), where braces are fixed only to the permanent molars (sixth teeth) and the four front incisors. This allows us to effectively solve local problems without overloading the child and without waiting for all the permanent teeth to erupt.
How long does treatment with children's braces last?
The first phase of treatment with a partial brace system typically takes 9 to 15 months. Its goal is to create the right foundation. After all permanent teeth have erupted, a second, shorter phase with a full brace system may be required to achieve the perfect final result.
